Wilmette is a vibrant community comprised of many strong neighborhoods, races, religions and levels of income. The Village extends approximately five miles west from Lake Michigan and is approximately one mile wide. The Village is a home rule community with a Village President and Board of Trustees elected at large and a Village Manager who runs the day to day operations of the Village. Wilmette was incorporated as a municipal corporation in 1872.
Wilmette is located 14 miles north of downtown Chicago on the western shore of Lake Michigan, Wilmette was recently recognized as the best place to live in Illinois (2015). The village boasts well-developed urban forests, and has enjoyed Tree City USA status from the Arbor Day Foundation since 1983. Well-maintained parks and outdoor spaces highlight the North Shore village's dedication to staying green.
